Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, resistance to insulin action, or both. The chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes is associated with long-term damage, dysfunction, and failure of different organs, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels.
This chapter covers facts and epidemiology data of the most common types of diabetes and related conditions including prediabetes, diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2, diabetes in pregnancy (including gestational diabetes), complications of diabetes and monogenic diabetes.
